In the Department of Social Work, we further the College’s mission to educate women to lead and make a difference in the world. We prepare students for generalist social work and graduate study. With experiential learning in the classroom and field, you’ll develop the interpersonal, research, and critical thinking skills that underscore effective social work intervention.

Programs

We offer a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in social work and a minor in gerontology. In addition to a wide range of elective courses from which to choose, all social work majors complete a practicum, or field placement, in a local organization dedicated to children, the elderly, or the disadvantaged. In this field placement, you’ll gain valuable, direct experience in your field of study, and your first of many chances to make real differences in the lives of others.

Faculty

The faculty in the Department of Social Work is comprised of accomplished experts and scholars who match their passion for social work and gerontology with a dedication to teaching and mentoring. Their areas of expertise include child welfare, family relationships, gerontology, and home and community based long-term care.

Outcomes

You’ll find our social work alumnae achieving great things all over the country, and as part of the Saint Mary’s sisterhood, they serve as valuable professional connections. Our graduates have pursued advanced degrees at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Washington University (St. Louis) George Warren School of Social Work, and the University of Illinois Jane Addams School of Social Work. Others have gone directly to positions in mental health settings, gerontology settings, medical settings, and management/administrative positions, among others. With a degree in social work, you’ll be well prepared for graduate school, as well as a diverse range of careers.
