January 1, 2014 College Students' Ratings of South Bend Improving (WNDU-TV) Area college students, including Saint Mary's students, are spending more time in South Bend, with 41% saying they spend 10 hours or more in the city. For many of our students, that's thanks to service hours they perform in schools as tutors and at events like Rebuilding Together where they help low-income residents improve their homes. In December, the results of an international exam for 15-year-olds showed American kids’ scores in math and science were stagnant, while students elsewhere — particularly in Asia — soared.
