“Everybody’s Hero: The Jackie Robinson Story” Coming Feb. 17 The Saint Mary’s College Office of Special Events is proud to present the Mad River Theater Works production of Everybody’s Hero: The Jackie Robinson Story. The musical, which is part of this year’s Shaheen/Duggan Performing Arts Series, will be presented on Monday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in O’Laughlin Auditorium. "Madeleva: A Play in Several Voices" Madeleva: A Play in Several Voices will be performed on Thursday, March 20, 7 p.m., in O’Laughlin Auditorium. The work commemorates the life of former Saint Mary’s College president, Sister M. Madeleva Wolff, CSC. Sister Madeleva was a visionary, an educator, a medieval scholar, a poet, and a woman of deep spiritual conviction. In her 27 years as president (1934-1961), she put those gifts to good use leading Saint Mary’s to national prominence as a premier Catholic liberal arts college. 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of her death. Saint Mary’s Offers Students Car-Sharing Option Today, Saint Mary’s College launches a partnership with Zipcar, to offer a car-sharing network on campus. The convenient transportation option is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for students, faculty, and staff ages 18 and older. Students are expected to be the most frequent users. Once enrolled as Zipcar members, the Saint Mary’s community may also reserve Zipcars at the University of Notre Dame and, in turn, their community can use Saint Mary’s Zipcars. Dance Marathon’s 5K for Riley Hospital for Children is Oct. 3 Saint Mary’s College’s students will host their sixth annual Dance Marathon “For The Kids 5K” (FT5K) race in support of Riley Hospital for Children on Thursday, October 3. Riley, located in Indianapolis, treats sick children from all over the state, including the South Bend area. While the actual Dance Marathon is months away (April 5, 2014), students at the College are eager to kick-off fundraising for the year with the annual FT5K run. Cho Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Berkley. On Thursday, October 30, at 5 p.m. in Carroll Auditorium, Madeleva Hall. Elementary Students Learn Science is Fun (South Bend Tribune) Elkhart elementary students experimented with chemistry with Saint Mary’s College chemistry and education students recently, making a thick slime they could take home to play with. “Our goal this year is to get these young kids interested in continuing in science,” said Dara Marquez, 21, a rising senior and chemistry major at Saint Mary’s. More than 100 kids spent the day experimenting with long-chain polymers, or chemical compounds of bonded molecules, in Science Hall. The students are from elementary schools throughout Elkhart Community School Corp. VP for Mission to Become President of Congregation (Observer) After three years as vice president for the Division for Mission at Saint Mary’s College, Sister Veronique Wiedower left the office on Friday to begin her new role as president of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. Sister Veronique was elected to the position at the 2014 General Chapter that was held in Entebbe, Uganda over the summer. She will be installed as president on Sunday, September 7.
