Today Saint Mary’s College, a Catholic, women’s liberal arts college in Notre Dame, Indiana, proudly releases The Status of Girls in Indiana 2013 (SGI). A team of faculty and students compiled the report, which draws together publicly available statistics on Hoosier girls ages 10 to 19. The SGI report is topically arranged and covers demographics, education, and health. From all indications, it’s the first comprehensive study on the health and well-being of Indiana girls. Students to Perform “The Enchanted Pig,” a Fairytale Opera In February the Saint Mary’s College Department of Music Department will proudly present the fun-filled fairy tale The Enchanted Pig. This opera musical by British composer Jonathan Dove will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20 through Saturday, Feb. 22. There will also be a matinee performance that Saturday at 2 p.m. Performances will be held in Little Theatre, Moreau Center for the Arts. Students Facilitate National Letter-Writing Campaign to Pope (Observer... Pope Francis asked, and Saint Mary’s delivered — literally. Last fall, 10 Saint Mary’s students, the Office of Campus Ministry, and the Center for Spirituality came together to discuss ways in which the Catholic Church could better reach young women around the world. Ann Korb ’54 Receives 2014 Distinguished Alumna Award The Distinguished Alumna Award, awarded annually by the Alumnae Association of Saint Mary’s College of Notre Dame, IN, honors a woman who exemplifies the standards, ideals, and mission of this Catholic liberal arts women’s college and who has given outstanding service through ongoing work for the Alumnae Association. The award is the association’s highest recognition. This year’s recipient is Ann Korb ’54, of South Bend, who exemplifies the standards, ideals, and mission of the College through leadership positions in her professional and personal life. Students Conduct Oral History Project with Sisters (South Bend Tribune... Professor Marne Austin had a unique assignment for students in her Into to Communication Studies course: an oral history project where students were paired with Sisters of the Holy Cross. While the congregation's motherhouse is on campus, many of the students hadn't had occasion to get to know these women of faith. It was an opportunity for students to hone their interview and listening skills as communicators, while getting to know members of a subculture on campus. The Center for Spirituality (CFS) at Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce its 2014 Spring Lecture Series, The Life Leadership of Women Religious. The annual series is complemented this year by a play commemorating the life of former Saint Mary’s College president, Sister M. Madeleva Wolff, CSC. Sister Madeleva was a visionary, an educator, a medieval scholar, a poet, and a woman of deep spiritual conviction. 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of her death. Tami Tango Trio to Teach about Argentine Music and Dance during Reside... The Tami Tango Trio, an internationally acclaimed Argentine music and dance ensemble, will be at Saint Mary’s College for a two-day residency Monday-Tuesday, October 13-14. The trio, which features traditional Argentine tango and folk music, will offer three events open to students and the public. Panel Discussion: Justice in a Material World This is the first in a semester-long series about materialism, justice, fashion, and sustainability. This panel discussion is about thrift store shopping as a means of pursuing social justice. The event is open to the public.
