World Cinema Festival, Feb. 3-7 The Saint Mary’s College Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership (CWIL) will host the World Cinema Festival, Monday, Feb. 3 through Friday, Feb. 7. This annual event, which is free and open to the public, will feature five films in the original language with English subtitles over the course of five nights. Each will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Vander Vennet Theatre on the ground level of the Student Center. Mary Acker Klingenberger ’79 Receives 2014 Alumna Achievement Award The Alumna Achievement Award, awarded annually by the Alumnae Association of Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN honors an alumna of the Catholic women’s college who is outstanding in her personal and professional accomplishments and is a recognized leader in her field of endeavor. The honoree exemplifies the standards, ideals, and mission of the College in its commitment to the value of a Christian liberal arts education. This year’s recipient is Mary Acker Klingenberger ’79. Klingenberger, of Hinsdale, IL. College Hosts International Women Again for State Department Institute Saint Mary’s College is proud to hold its third Global Women Leaders Institute, a U.S. Department of State “Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI)” from June 28 to August 1. This summer’s SUSI welcomes 20 undergraduate women from Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Iraq, and Jordan, plus four Saint Mary’s students. This four-week academic residency program and week of educational travel is part of a broader State Department initiative designed to promote a better understanding of the U.S. abroad and to help develop future world leaders. “Henry V” Performed By An All-Female Cast The Saint Mary’s College Theatre Program is proud to announce Henry V as the 2013 spring production. Performances will take place in Little Theatre, Moreau Center for the Arts, at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Apr. 3 through Saturday, Apr. 5 and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 6. Psychology Students Research Concussions for Senior Comps (Fox 28) The Indiana High School Athletic Association reports more than 1,200 concussions occurred during the fall sports season. Two Saint Mary College psychology students who have completed senior comprehensives on head injuries in sports say concussions have become a serious societal problem. "It doesn't really matter if it's a small concussion or a big concussion....You still need to make sure that the right precautions are taken, " says Leila Ellis '15. Lauren Meyer '15 says repeat concussion are worrisome. "Essentially after they get these repetitive concussions their brain deteriorates... that could lead to cognitive disturbances which would be things like violence, or impulsivity." Two Faculty Receive Awards from College (South Bend Tribune) Saint Mary's College recognized two Saint Mary's faculty members with prestigious awards this spring. Julie Storme, a professor of modern languages and interim associate dean of faculty, received the Spes Unica Award for her eminent service to the college in teaching, scholarship, creative activity and service. Religious studies professor Phyllis Kaminski received the Maria Pieta Award, which recognizes the quality of teaching in courses for first-year students and sophomores. The award is in honor of Sister Maria Pieta, a Saint Mary’s teacher and administrator. “Symposium on Domestic Violence and Intersectionality,” a Justice ... On average, 20 people per minute are victims of physical violence by an intimate partner in the U.S. Over the course of a year, that equals more than 10 million victims. That’s according to the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey. The Justice Education program at Saint Mary's College is interested in openly discussing why this occurs and why a partner may not leave an abusive relationship.
