Students Enjoy "Sweet" Finish in Math Competition Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce that a team of mathematics students finished in the top 15 percent of the nearly 7,000 teams that competed in the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP) international competition called Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). Samantha Brady ’13 of South Bend and Olivia McIntee ’13 of Sylvania, Ohio made up the team that was named among the Meritorious Winners. They solved the eternal question: How can you produce brownies without burnt edges? Their solution: a hexagonal pan. Glenda Ritz, State School Superintendent, to Speak at Saint Mary’s Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce that Glenda Ritz, state superintendent of public instruction, and Matthew Tully, an Indianapolis Star political columnist, will speak at the College on Monday, November 11 at 6 p.m. While the event is designed for students studying education at Saint Mary’s, the College community and the public are invited to attend this free event. Students Get Some R&R During Finals Week (WNDU-TV) A stress relief event during finals week used furry friends to redefine "R and R."Rabbits and Relaxation is the idea behind the study break for Saint Mary’s students held Monday morning. The event allowed them to hold, pet, and play with rabbits as a stress reliever as they prepare for exams. Student and rabbit breeder Mara Scott '13 organized the event, as she has at the end of nearly every semester she's attended Saint Mary's. Alumna Receives College Roommate's Kidney (South Bend Tribune) It's said that at Saint Mary’s, you make friends for life, but here's a friend who saved the other's life. In June, Teresa Moriarty Kosse ’85 of Louisville donated a kidney to her college roommate Mary Desmond Liddell ’85 of South Bend. It's a touching story of friendship and the bond that has only grown stronger through the years. Activists Participate in "Take Back the Night" Events (ABC 57) Across the country, including at Saint Mary's and Notre Dame, "Take Back the Night" events took place Thursday calling attention to sexual abuse. According to Connie Adams, director of the Belles Against Violence Office at Saint Mary’s College, “Take Back the Night provides a space for individuals impacted by violence and abuse to shatter the silence often accompanying sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. It also allows our community to demonstrate our commitment to prevent violence from happening.” ABC 57 covered the local events. Communication Science and Disorders Career Awareness Day Planned The Saint Mary’s College chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is proud to co-host a free event highlighting the professions of communication science and disorders. National Communication Science and Disorders Career Awareness Day will be celebrated at the women’s college on Sunday, October 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. in room 135 of Spes Unica Hall. The event is intended for high school and college students interested in speech-language pathology and audiology. Center for Spirituality's Spring Lecture Series Announced The Center for Spirituality (CFS) at Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce its Spring Lecture Series. Established in 1984, the Center’s purpose is to help build a theologically well-grounded spirituality among members of the College community. This includes alumnae and friends of the College, both local and national. CFS emphasizes the multifaceted nature of spirituality, including the social dimensions of spirituality. Winter Wonderland to Bring Holiday Festivities to Area Children Saint Mary’s College students will host Winter Wonderland, a Christmas event for children affiliated with South Bend public schools, the Center for the Homeless, and Robinson Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Student Center. Children of Saint Mary’s College faculty and staff are also invited to the event.
