January 1, 2013 Speaker Lectures on Dangers of Stalking (South Bend Tribune) The Belles Against Violence Office (BAVO) invited Debbie Riddle, a nationally known speaker on the dangers of stalking, to speak at the College Monday. Among its functions, BAVO offers educational and violence prevention programming on campus. In 2003, Riddle’s sister, Peggy Klinke, was murdered by a man who stalked her for almost a year. Shortly after her sister’s murder, Riddle began speaking publicly to generate change. January 1, 2013 Saint Mary's Seniors Prepare for Commencement and Futures Saint Mary’s College will hold its 166th Commencement at noon on Saturday, May 18 on Le Mans Green in front of the iconic Le Mans Hall. The Class of 2013 is made up of 374 women from 33 states and one other country (Korea). The seniors are ready for their next step in life, whether that’s a job, an internship, a service opportunity, graduate school, etc. January 1, 2013 Junior Receives Research Fellowship in Memory of Zhang '15 (The Observ... One thing Ziqi Zhang '15 and Rachael Bridgman '14 had in common was a love of science and research. Bridgman recently received the NDnano Undergraduate Research Fellowship established in memory of Zhang, who died in the fall when she was hit by a car. “It is a true honor to be able to continue down the path that Ziqi loved, which was research,” Bridgman said. “I am happy to do this summer job in part on her behalf because this is what she would have done this summer. I have heard only wonderful things about her.” January 1, 2013 Cuevas '13 Named Outstanding Senior (Northwest Indiana Times) Saint Mary’s College has bestowed this year’s Outstanding Senior Award on Silvia Cuevas, of Hammond. Senior class president, Cuevas is a business administration major with concentrations in finance and international business. She received her recognition at the Alumnae-Senior Champagne Brunch, held Monday. January 1, 2013 Humanistic Studies Professor Honored with Maria Pieta Award Saint Mary’s College President Carol Ann Mooney presented Laura Williamson Ambrose, assistant professor of humanistic studies, with the Maria Pieta Award at Honors Convocation on Sunday, May 5. The Maria Pieta Award was established in 1976 in honor of Sister Maria Pieta, CSC, who was a teacher and an administrator at Saint Mary’s College. The award recognizes the quality of teaching in courses for freshmen and sophomores. January 1, 2013 “Down the Avenue” To Honor Three Women for Service On Wednesday, June 19, Saint Mary’s College will host Down the Avenue, an event recognizing the service of individuals who exemplify the College’s mission to prepare women for roles of leadership and action. The dinner, typically held every other year, raises funds to establish a scholarship for students who are active volunteers in Michiana and supports the College’s Office for Civic and Social Engagement (OCSE), which facilitates local volunteer efforts. Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce that for the second year another Saint Mary’s senior has been named an Orr Fellow. Nichole Clayton ’13 is the latest Saint Mary’s student to receive the Orr Fellowship, a two-year postgraduate opportunity that connects high potential professionals with dynamic, fast growing entrepreneurial companies in Indiana. Clayton, from Bay City, Michigan, is a communication studies and business administration double major, with a concentration in management. Saint Mary’s College and the Department of Humanistic Studies proudly announce that the 2013 Christian Culture Lecture speaker is Krista Tippett. The author and journalist is best known as the host of the Peabody Award-winning program "On Being" which airs on National Public Radio (NPR). Tippett will offer her lecture, titled “Civic Healing and Christian Virtue in the 21st Century,” on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m. in O'Laughlin Auditorium.
