January 1, 2013 Humanistic Studies Professor Honored with Maria Pieta Award Saint Mary’s College President Carol Ann Mooney presented Laura Williamson Ambrose, assistant professor of humanistic studies, with the Maria Pieta Award at Honors Convocation on Sunday, May 5. The Maria Pieta Award was established in 1976 in honor of Sister Maria Pieta, CSC, who was a teacher and an administrator at Saint Mary’s College. The award recognizes the quality of teaching in courses for freshmen and sophomores. January 1, 2013 Junior Receives Research Fellowship in Memory of Zhang '15 (The Observ... One thing Ziqi Zhang '15 and Rachael Bridgman '14 had in common was a love of science and research. Bridgman recently received the NDnano Undergraduate Research Fellowship established in memory of Zhang, who died in the fall when she was hit by a car. “It is a true honor to be able to continue down the path that Ziqi loved, which was research,” Bridgman said. “I am happy to do this summer job in part on her behalf because this is what she would have done this summer. I have heard only wonderful things about her.” January 1, 2013 “Down the Avenue” To Honor Three Women for Service On Wednesday, June 19, Saint Mary’s College will host Down the Avenue, an event recognizing the service of individuals who exemplify the College’s mission to prepare women for roles of leadership and action. Nichole Clayton ’13 is the latest Saint Mary’s student to receive the Orr Fellowship, a two-year postgraduate opportunity that connects high potential professionals with dynamic, fast growing entrepreneurial companies in Indiana. Clayton, from Bay City, Michigan, is a communication studies and business administration double major, with a concentration in management. Saint Mary’s College and the Department of Humanistic Studies proudly announce that the 2013 Christian Culture Lecture speaker is Krista Tippett. The author and journalist is best known as the host of the Peabody Award-winning program "On Being" which airs on National Public Radio (NPR). Tippett will offer her lecture, titled “Civic Healing and Christian Virtue in the 21st Century,” on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m. in O'Laughlin Auditorium. The gun—one of only a handful in the world—came from Poland, his home country, during World War II. The Polish government views the rifle as a “great piece of cultural and scientific significance” and claims that had been stolen during the war. U.S. federal agents seized it recently on behalf of Poland. History professor David Stefancic, whose expertise includes Polish history, was interviewed for the article. He told the Washington Post, Poland is “very protective” of pieces the government considers “related to the defense of the Polish state in any way, shape or form.” January 1, 2013 Pursuing Her Passions with Two Degrees (South Bend Tribune) Mary Bevilacqua couldn't imagine giving up her art to pursue science, or sacrificing her science for an art career. "I was so passionate about art and science, I just couldn't see going through life without both," she says. As it turns out, she didn't have to. Bevilacqua will earn a bachelor of arts degree in studio art Saturday from Saint Mary's College. Last spring, Bevilacqua completed her bachelor of science degree in chemistry.
