Social Work Students Offer Best Practices for Homeless Youth Count (WS... January 2, 2015 Social work students are working with the Youth Service Bureau to account for the number of homeless youth in St. Joseph County. The bureau's Street Outreach seeks anyone between the ages of about 13 and 24 who faces neglect, homelessness or street or family violence, as well as young mothers. In the fall, professor Fran Kominkiewicz's Research Methods class assessed how to execute an accurate population count. The class is mentioned at the end of this in depth story.

Students learn the dangers of stalking (WNDU-TV) January 2, 2015 U.S. Department of Justice survey that shows 13 percent of female students on college campuses experience stalking behavior that causes the victim to fear for her safety. That danger is one reason that Saint Mary's has the Belles Against Violence Office. BAVO educates on all forms of violence against women, including intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and stalking. This week a nationally known speaker was on campus to share her sister's story. Students Katherine Freed '18 and Molly Briody '16 were two students moved by the talk.

Junior Spreads the Word, The @PopeIsHope & #GoodIsWinning (WSBT-TV) January 2, 2015 A Saint Mary's student is using social media to build excitement about Pope Francis's historic visit. She's one of only 30 people chosen to lead a hashtag campaign called #GoodIsWinning. Kelly Vaughan '17 is spreading the word about a new hashtag campaign. Her social media of choice is Instagram. The goal is to encourage people to find at least one positive event each day and share it on social media using #GoodIsWinning. She told WSBT-TV, "It's really easy to focus on negative things that happen around us, negative stories and negative parts of our day. But, this is all about finding the good and showing people that there's good."
