WHO IS HYPATIA?  She is the first known woman mathematican and scientist.  (*Note: Hypatia is pronounced "hy-PAY-sha".)

PURPOSE: Hypatia Day is a day-long conference for seventh grade girls to celebrate and share enthusiasm for science and mathematics with college women who are preparing for careers in related fields.  It is believed that girls of this age greatly benefit from extra attention and encouragement for their interest in studies which require a high degree of training in mathematics and science (a.k.a., STEM fields).  Participants of Hypatia Day at Saint Mary's College will be encouraged to view one another as potential physicians, research scientists, actuaries, engineers, statisticians, data analysts, technology experts, and the like.  The girls will interact in the lab with role models of college and high school women who are preparing for a future in the STEM fields.

A separate program for parents attending Hypatia Day with their daughters prepares them to continue to support their daughters' career aspirations.  A panel discussion will focus on what curriculum best prepares a student for college and keeps all of her options open.  Another session will provide information on financial preparation for a college education.  There will also be an opportunity for parents to meet and talk to Saint Mary's College STEM students.
