More than $200,000 has been raised to support the mission of Saint Mary’s College’s Office for Civic and Social Engagement (OCSE), a nationally recognized resource center that facilitates the College’s volunteer efforts in the community. The good news was announced at the Down the Avenue community event on June 15.

“Lives are being transformed because of your generosity—the lives of those we serve and the lives of our students who reach out to serve,” Saint Mary’s College President Carol Ann Mooney '72 said as she thanked more than 350 invited business and community leaders, alumnae, and friends who gathered in the Noble Family Dining Hall.

OSCE Director Carolyne Call also expressed her gratitude. “The generosity was remarkable!” she said. “These funds will allow us to continue our work in the local community, making a difference in the lives of children in need.”

Carrying out its mission through partnerships with schools and community agencies, OCSE encourages students, faculty, and staff to participate in volunteer service and community engagement. Consequently, more than 80 percent of Saint Mary's College students participate in volunteer service by the time they graduate.

In addition to the announcement of the OCSE funding, three women were honored with the 2011 Spirit of Service Award for outstanding volunteer efforts: Alma Bravo ’12, Sister Susan Kintzele '64, CSC, and Carmen Murphy.
