Annual “Take Back the Night” Event is April 24 The Saint Mary’s College Belles Against Violence Office will once again team up with the University of Notre Dame’s Gender Relation Center to promote National Sexual Assault Awareness Month through the annual Take Back the Night event. Members of the Michiana community are invited to attend a series of activities Thursday evening, April 24, to raise awareness and break the silence surrounding violence and abuse. “Bloom” Seminar Meant to Grow Middle School Girls’ Confidence On the heels of the release of the first Status of Girls in Indiana report, issued by Saint Mary’s College in the fall, is news of a summer seminar, launched by an alumna, called Bloom for Girls—a program aimed at boosting girls’ self-confidence. The Status of Girls report—a comprehensive study by faculty and students on the health and well-being of Indiana girls ages 10-19—found many girls suffer from low self-esteem in middle and high school. Social Work Workshop on Caring for Self to be Held on Campus The Saint Mary's College Department of Social Work and the Office of Special Events will sponsor a workshop for those in or studying to be in the social work sector. The event, “The Ethics of Self-Care: Social Workers, Heal by Self,” will start with lunch at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 29 in Rice Commons of the Student Center at the College. Click for a campus map. The cost of lunch and the workshop is $24. The cost of the workshop alone is $15. The workshop itself begins at 11:45 a.m. Continuing Education Units (CEU) are available. Alumna to Discuss Catholic Worker Movement and Meeting Dorothy Day Rosalie Riegle ’59 will speak at the College on Tuesday, October 7 as a 2014 Collegiate Speakers Series lecturer. In her talk, "Matching Insides and Outsides: A Journey to the Catholic Worker," Riegle will explore her life and career experiences and her passion for working with the Catholic Worker movement. The talk will take place at 6 p.m. on second floor mezzanine of the Cushwa-Leighton Library. The event is free and open to the public. Classic “Wuthering Heights” to Come to Life on Stage Saint Mary’s College will host the Aquila Theatre’s production of the classic novel "Wuthering Heights" on Monday, October 13 as a part of this year’s Shaheen/Duggan Performing Arts Series at the College. The production will take place at 7:30 p.m. in O'Laughlin Auditorium. The production illuminates Emily Bronte’s story of passion, revenge, family, class, and the supernatural that will strike contemporary audiences despite the age-old setting. English Language School Expands Horizons (South Bend Tribune) Three young women from widely different backgrounds meet in a Saint Mary's College classroom to share their cultures, speaking in carefully worded English to describe their home countries. This is a snapshot of the English Language School, which began in 2011, and is designed to prepare international students for higher education in the U.S. So far the school has drawn about 60 students. Panel Discussion: Women Against #WomenAgainstFeminism This panel discussion, sponsored by the Department of Gender and Women's Studies, will look at being a feminist today and respond to the #WomenAgainstFeminism movement, an online social movement which grew in popularity over the summer. The event will take place on Wednesday, September 3 at 6:30 p.m. in room 145 of Spes Unica Hall. Nursing Student Serves St. Margaret's House (WNDU) Between going to classes, working on projects, studying for tests, and club involvement, students have a lot on their plates. That doesn’t stop one Saint Mary’s student from using her time and skills to help the community. Nursing major Sarah Hossfeld ‘15 spends a lot of her time in downtown South Bend at St. Margaret’s House, a day center for women in poverty. New Department in Gender and Women’s Studies Offers New Major Saint Mary’s College begins the 2014-15 year with a new academic department, the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies (GWS), and a new interdisciplinary major in GWS. The College has offered a minor in women’s studies since in 1985. The program became known as gender and women’s studies in 2012, and in February of this year the Academic Affairs Council approved GWS as a major. The minor remains an option for students.
