Patricia Arch Green Award Shelby Cornett '13 is the 2012-2013 Patricia Arch Green Award recipient due to her outstanding dedication to the CAT Program and CAT activities. Shelby became involved with the CAT Program in her sophomore year as a CAT Scholar, working in the classrooms as a teacher’s assistant and after school with third and fourth graders as a tutor. Even after completing over 600 hours of service as a CAT Scholar, Shelby returned to the CAT Program as a volunteer, contributing many more hours as a teacher’s assistant, after-school tutor, and pen pal. Belles' Late Surge Squelched by Thunder ANGOLA, Ind. - A 14-1 run by the Belles late in the second half pulled the Saint Mary's basketball team within 53-51 of Trine, but the comeback bid fell short as the host Thunder prevailed 63-57 on Wednesday evening. Saint Catherine Medal Awarded to Third Year Student Each year, Saint Mary's College awards the Saint Catherine Medal to a sophomore or junior who has demonstrated high standards of personal excellence and scholarship and has contributed to the College community in the spirit of Christian leadership. This award commemorates Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the patron saint of scholars and especially of women scholars. Kappa Gamma Pi, the National Catholic Honor Society, sponsors the award. “Band of Sisters” Documentary/Panel Discussion Saint Mary’s College will host a screening of the documentary “Band of Sisters” and a panel discussion following the film on Wednesday, September 18 at 6:30 pm in Carroll Auditorium, Madeleva Hall. The panel will include the film’s producer/director. The event is free and open to the public. Political Science Professor Honored with Maria Pieta Award The Maria Pieta Award was established in 1976 in honor of Sister Maria Pieta, CSC, who was a teacher and an administrator at Saint Mary’s College. The award recognizes the quality of teaching done in courses for freshmen and sophomores. The recipient of this year’s award is Professor Patrick Pierce, Chair of the Department of Political Science. Sister Olivette Whalen, CSC Award for General Service The Sister Olivette Whalen, CSC Award for General Service is awarded each year to a Saint Mary’s student who has served the College and the community in multifaceted ways. I’m very pleased to introduce this year’s winner, Haley Van Der Linden '13. During the spring 2012 semester, Haley worked with St. Margaret’s House, a day center in downtown South Bend that provides a safe and caring community for women. Despite being limited by a serious knee injury, Haley was committed to working for St. Margaret’s from campus for the first part of the semester; in the second part of the semester, Haley had the opportunity to serve the women at the Center in a variety of ways, including preparing and sharing meals and conversations with the guests.
