2013 Humanitas Award Recipient Announced The Humanitas Award, awarded annually by the Alumnae Association of Saint Mary’s College, recognizes an alumna of the Catholic liberal arts women’s college who is outstanding in her personal and volunteer accomplishments and is recognized for her concern for the interests and welfare of her fellow human beings. Her actions exemplify the qualities of personal dedication, compassion, selflessness and sacrifice through social action, education, and reform within the community, the Church, and the world. The 2013 recipient is Mary Rainey ’63, who is recognized for her lifelong service in literacy, education for women and families, and disaster relief, and her unwavering commitment to people in need around the world. Saint Mary’s College Announces 4-Year Graduation Promise At a time when the national dialogue about higher education is centered on cost and value, Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce the Four-Year Graduation Promise. Starting in the fall with the incoming Class of 2017, students who follow the promise’s guidelines are guaranteed to graduate in four years or the College will pay for any additional courses a student needs to earn her degree. No other college or university in the area offers such a promise. College Receives Final Volumes of The Saint John’s Bible Saint Mary’s College has received the last two volumes of the rare Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible. The set includes a total of seven volumes. The recently received volumes make up the New Testament: Volume 6, Gospels and Acts, and Volume 7, Letters and Revelation. The Bible, a generous gift from Judy Rauenhorst Mahoney ’74, was announced in the fall of 2010 when the first four volumes arrived. The Bible is on display at the Cushwa-Leighton Library at Saint Mary's College. Does the Grand Old Party (GOP) need a makeover? Savage says the party could benefit from better defining how it proposes to stimulate the economy and job growth. Savage also said there are more Latino voters than in the past and the GOP needs to reach out to them. Olympian to Discuss Discerning a Business Career with Community Focus The Cross Currents Program and the Women's Executive Forums at Saint Mary’s College and KeyBank’s Key4Women are pleased to welcome to campus Olympian Stephanie Hightower. Hightower is board chairperson for the USA Track & Field Association and president and CEO of the Columbus Urban League (CUL). She will deliver a presentation entitled “Developing Your Lifelong Brand” in which she will discuss discerning her career path. The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, November 1 in Vander Vennet Theatre in the Student Center. Saint Mary’s College Sponsors House for Rebuilding Together On Saturday, April 13, an estimated 75 Saint Mary's College students will roll up their sleeves to participate in Rebuilding Together, a community-driven effort to rehabilitate homes in South Bend. Students will complete basic household tasks, such as painting, cleaning and planting at a Saint Mary’s sponsored home. It is through service events, like Rebuilding Together, that students have the opportunity to connect with those in the community in very real and tangible ways. Eighty percent of students participate in service before graduating. Three Saint Mary’s College students share what it was like to be studying with the school’s Rome Program when Pope Francis was elected as the new leader of the Catholic Church. “We were standing in the crowd after the white smoke had emerged from the chimney. Hundreds of thousands of people were sharing the same experience there, feeling everything you were feeling. There is truly nothing like it,” said Nikki Charter '15. “There is absolutely no doubt in your mind as to how powerful faith and prayer can be.” Saint Mary’s College Applies for Second Patent in School's History Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce it has filed for its second patent in the College’s 169-year history. The first patent was filed last summer. Both patents are pending and will protect paper analytical device (PAD) tools developed by chemistry professor Toni Barstis, PhD, and a team of undergraduate chemistry students at this Catholic, liberal arts college.
