Alumna Receives College Roommate's Kidney (South Bend Tribune) It's said that at Saint Mary’s, you make friends for life, but here's a friend who saved the other's life. In June, Teresa Moriarty Kosse ’85 of Louisville donated a kidney to her college roommate Mary Desmond Liddell ’85 of South Bend. It's a touching story of friendship and the bond that has only grown stronger through the years. Activists Participate in "Take Back the Night" Events (ABC 57) Across the country, including at Saint Mary's and Notre Dame, "Take Back the Night" events took place Thursday calling attention to sexual abuse. According to Connie Adams, director of the Belles Against Violence Office at Saint Mary’s College, “Take Back the Night provides a space for individuals impacted by violence and abuse to shatter the silence often accompanying sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. It also allows our community to demonstrate our commitment to prevent violence from happening.” ABC 57 covered the local events. Communication Science and Disorders Career Awareness Day Planned The Saint Mary’s College chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is proud to co-host a free event highlighting the professions of communication science and disorders. National Communication Science and Disorders Career Awareness Day will be celebrated at the women’s college on Sunday, October 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. in room 135 of Spes Unica Hall. The event is intended for high school and college students interested in speech-language pathology and audiology. Center for Spirituality's Spring Lecture Series Announced The Center for Spirituality (CFS) at Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce its Spring Lecture Series. Established in 1984, the Center’s purpose is to help build a theologically well-grounded spirituality among members of the College community. This includes alumnae and friends of the College, both local and national. CFS emphasizes the multifaceted nature of spirituality, including the social dimensions of spirituality. Winter Wonderland to Bring Holiday Festivities to Area Children Saint Mary’s College students will host Winter Wonderland, a Christmas event for children affiliated with South Bend public schools, the Center for the Homeless, and Robinson Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Student Center. Children of Saint Mary’s College faculty and staff are also invited to the event. 2013 Humanitas Award Recipient Announced The Humanitas Award, awarded annually by the Alumnae Association of Saint Mary’s College, recognizes an alumna of the Catholic liberal arts women’s college who is outstanding in her personal and volunteer accomplishments and is recognized for her concern for the interests and welfare of her fellow human beings. Her actions exemplify the qualities of personal dedication, compassion, selflessness and sacrifice through social action, education, and reform within the community, the Church, and the world. The 2013 recipient is Mary Rainey ’63, who is recognized for her lifelong service in literacy, education for women and families, and disaster relief, and her unwavering commitment to people in need around the world. Saint Mary’s College Announces 4-Year Graduation Promise At a time when the national dialogue about higher education is centered on cost and value, Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce the Four-Year Graduation Promise. Starting in the fall with the incoming Class of 2017, students who follow the promise’s guidelines are guaranteed to graduate in four years or the College will pay for any additional courses a student needs to earn her degree. No other college or university in the area offers such a promise. College Receives Final Volumes of The Saint John’s Bible Saint Mary’s College has received the last two volumes of the rare Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible. The set includes a total of seven volumes. The recently received volumes make up the New Testament: Volume 6, Gospels and Acts, and Volume 7, Letters and Revelation. The Bible, a generous gift from Judy Rauenhorst Mahoney ’74, was announced in the fall of 2010 when the first four volumes arrived. The Bible is on display at the Cushwa-Leighton Library at Saint Mary's College. Political Science Professor on GOP Makeover (WSBT Radio) WSBT Radio interviewed political science professor Sean Savage on the Republican party's image. Does the Grand Old Party (GOP) need a makeover? Savage says the party could benefit from better defining how it proposes to stimulate the economy and job growth. Savage also said there are more Latino voters than in the past and the GOP needs to reach out to them.
