European History Professor on WWII Rifle Case (Washington Post) A Virginia gun collector cherished his wz.38M Maroszek rifle. The gun—one of only a handful in the world—came from Poland, his home country, during World War II. The Polish government views the rifle as a “great piece of cultural and scientific significance” and claims that had been stolen during the war. U.S. federal agents seized it recently on behalf of Poland. History professor David Stefancic, whose expertise includes Polish history, was interviewed for the article. He told the Washington Post, Poland is “very protective” of pieces the government considers “related to the defense of the Polish state in any way, shape or form.” Pursuing Her Passions with Two Degrees (South Bend Tribune) Mary Bevilacqua couldn't imagine giving up her art to pursue science, or sacrificing her science for an art career. "I was so passionate about art and science, I just couldn't see going through life without both," she says. As it turns out, she didn't have to. Bevilacqua will earn a bachelor of arts degree in studio art Saturday from Saint Mary's College. Last spring, Bevilacqua completed her bachelor of science degree in chemistry. Professor on Congresswoman's 'No' Vote (South Bend Tribune) The South Bend Tribune turned to political science professor Sean Savage for comment on whether Republican Congresswoman Jackie Walorski's 'no' vote to end the government shutdown will hurt her politically. Savage said, as a Republican in a solidly Republican district, it was probably a smart move. Speaker, Superintendent of IN Schools, Lists Goals (South Bend Tribune... Love Your Body Week to Share Positive Body Image Messages Saint Mary’s College students will host Love Your Body Week next week, Feb. 25- March 1. The theme for the week is “Yes, You Are the Fairest of Them All” and includes events meant to encourage young women to see themselves in a positive light. In 2006, the Saint Mary’s Office of Civic and Social Engagement (OCSE) initiated CAT, which is modeled after a similar AmeriCorps program. The CAT program is designed to meet the academic needs of students in some of South Bend’s Title 1 elementary schools. It's Thanksgiving, Not Black Friday Eve (The Christian Science Monitor... Pass the coupons and the gravy. Thanksgiving seems to be becoming "Black Friday Eve" with more and more stores opening on Thanksgiving night. Instead of stopping to consider what we have and being grateful for it, consumers may be thinking about what they don't have and want to get. Adrienne Lyles-Chockley, visiting philosophy professor who heads the justice education program, is included in this Christian Science Monitor article.
