Accounting Professor Shares Tips for Taxes (WSBT-TV)
John Cergnul, assistant professor of accounting, appeared on WSBT-TV's Saturday morning show with tips for tax season. He shared information on the Notre Dame/Saint Mary’s Tax Assistance Program, where students volunteer to help low-income residents with their tax returns. He also talked about the growing problem with identity theft and taxes, where people file fake returns with stolen Social Security numbers and pocket the money the IRS sends back.

Mayor of Gary, Karen Freeman-Wilson, to Speak at Saint Mary’s Colleg...
Saint Mary’s College is pleased to announce that Karen Freeman-Wilson, mayor of Gary, Ind., will speak at the College on Monday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. Her presentation is titled “Want to Learn About Leadership?” and will be held in the Student Center Lounge. Students enrolled in the social work course Intercultural Leadership Development organized the speaking engagement, which is free to attend and open to the public.

Erin Gruwell, Famous for "Freedom Writers," to Speak Nov. 16
Saint Mary’s College is pleased to welcome Erin Gruwell, educator and founder of the Freedom Writers Foundation, to speak about “Teaching Tolerance.” The event will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 in Little Theatre, Moreau Center for the Performing Arts. The public is invited to this free event, which celebrates diversity and understanding and takes place on the United Nations International Day of Tolerance. Gruwell will also sign copies of her book. Belles Honored for Academic Achievement
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Saint Mary's cross country team was one of 197 NCAA Division III colleges and universities to be recognized by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as an All-Academic Team.

Halloween Magic Show to Demonstrate Science is a Treat
It’s no trick. Learning about science is a treat! Saint Mary’s College chemistry students, dressed as mad scientists, will host a Halloween Magic Show for South Bend-area children on campus at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 30. The public is invited to attend and children are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes. Kids will get to do some hands-on experiments and then watch the college students conduct some on stage. The evening will end with kids making ice cream with the help of liquid nitrogen.

Sister Maria Concepta McDermott, CSC Award for Service in Education
Elizabeth Litke ’13 has taught in a variety of settings, volunteering her expertise as an educator in diverse classrooms in the local area and beyond. In addition to her successful field study experience at several public and Catholic schools in the area, she has tutored third and fourth graders in the College Academy of Tutoring for three years.
