Offensive Outburst Bolsters Belles Past Leopards, Vikings
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - The Saint Mary's softball team had a breakout day on offense as the Belles posted 21 runs while surrendering just one unearned run. Saint Mary's defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology 13-1 in five innings before taking down Bethany Lutheran by an 8-0 final in five innings.

Professor Terri Russ Honored with Service Award (The Observer)
Terri L. Russ, assistant professor of communication studies, is being honored in Indianapolis today as the recipient of the Indiana Campus Compact 2014 Brian Douglas Hiltunen Faculty Award for the Scholarship of Engagement. ICC recognizes Russ for encouraging her students to connect service with larger personal and professional goals through experiential learning.

Professor/Interim Associate Dean of Faculty Honored with Spes Unica Aw...
Saint Mary’s College Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Patricia Fleming presented Julie Storme, professor of modern languages and interim associate dean of faculty, with the Spes Unica Award at Honors Convocation on Sunday, May 4. The recipient of the award is kept secret until the Commencement-related event. The Spes Unica Award recognizes a faculty member’s eminent service to Saint Mary’s College. Contributions can be in the area of teaching, scholarship/ creative activity and/or service. Storme has been at the College for 28 years.

Change in Vatican's Tone, Says Religious Studies Professor (WSBT-TV)
The Vatican released the midterm progress report from the Synod of Bishop on Monday. The document says same-sex couples have "gifts to offer the Christian community." Some saw this as a major shift for the Church. “What the real news was, was not what it said, but the tone in which it took,” said Joseph Incandela, a professor of religious studies at Saint Mary’s College.

Two Seniors Selected for Prestigious Orr Fellowships
Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce that for the third consecutive year Saint Mary’s seniors have been named Orr Fellows. Annie Kennedy ’14 of Gainesville, Fla. and Sara Napierkowski ’14 of Bethlehem, Pa. were recently announced as incoming fellows. Previous Orr Fellows from Saint Mary’s include Nichole Clayton ’13, Amanda Lester ’12 and Melissa Jackson ’12.

History Professor on Putin and Crimea (HNN)
If you’re surprised by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s move in Crimea, you’ve not been paying attention. That's according to history professor David Stefancic, whose expertise includes Russia. His opinion piece appears on the History News Network website. Stefancic writes, "Putin sees himself as the descendent of Ivan Grozny, Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and Josef Stalin, not as George Bush saw him by looking into his eyes and seeing his soul or as Barrack Obama saw him as a kindred spirit ready for a reset button."
