Professor on Where Lottery Money Goes (Star Gazette)
Political science professor Patrick Pierce, whose expertise includes the politics of legalized gambling and lotteries funding education, was recently interviewed by a reporter at an Albany, New York newspaper. The article is about how the state's lottery revenue is soaring, while the percentage of money going to schools is stagnant.“The notion was the lottery was going to really give states a big chunk of change that would do some remarkable things in terms of improving education — and that simply didn’t happen,” Pierce told the paper.

Local Campuses Are Neighborhoods to Explore (South Bend Tribune)
On any given week during the academic year, there are lectures, performances, recitals, exhibits and other events happening at local colleges and universities that are open to the public. Many are free or cost little to attend. Retirees may enjoy taking in a lecture during the day or the evening. Families may like to attend a play or musical. Scholars lead some of the events, while talented students studying dance, theatre or music perform others. Kyle Zimmer—founder, president, and CEO of First Book, a non-profit organization that provides books to children in need— was this year’s Commencement Speaker. At the podium she shared “5 Secrets Adults Won’t Tell You” with graduates, who found the tips to be insightful and witty. Now, Zimmer shares her “5 Things…” with readers of her blog.

Women's Entrepreneurship Initiative SPARKS more entrepreneurs (South B...
Eight local women hope to SPARK their entrepreneurial businesses in the New Year. Participants in the Saint Mary's SPARK program’s third session recently graduated. Read to hear about their business ideas. SPARK is run out of the Women's Entrepreneurial Initiative (WEI) office at the College. Night classes will be offered for the next SPARK class. “Get Inked” Teen Writing Conference
The Saint Mary’s College Department of Education will sponsor a teen writing conference for girls and boys titled “Get Inked” for students in grades 8-12 on Saturday, November 16, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event, which costs $40 and requires pre-registration, will start and end in Carroll Auditorium, Madeleva Hall. The day includes a talk by author James Kennedy and several sessions from which to choose. The registration fee includes lunch and an autographed copy of Kennedy’s latest book.

Women Ex-offenders Share Stories at Symposium (South Bend Tribune)
Previously incarcerated women spoke up about their past tribulations and personal transformations at Saint Mary's College recently. As a part of the justice education program's Symposium on Female Incarceration, ex-offenders shared their testimonies regarding the difficulties women face when trying to re-enter society.

Soon-to-be Graduates Look Forward to Future Jobs (Fox 28)
Commencement season is in the air. Seniors were picking up their caps and gowns on Wednesday and filling out destination surveys, letting the College know if they have a job or have been accepted to graduate school. The national job market has not improved much in the past year, says Stacie Jeffirs, the director of the Career Crossings Office, but there are positive signs for job seekers. Fox 28 talked to Jeffirs and a couple students who have found jobs.
