2013 Distinguished Alumna Award Recipient Announced The Distinguished Alumna Award, awarded annually by the Alumnae Association of Saint Mary’s College, honors a woman who exemplifies the standards, ideals, and mission of this Catholic liberal arts women’s college and who has given outstanding service through ongoing work for the Alumnae Association. The award is the association's highest recognition. The 2013 recipient is Nora Barry Fischer ’73 of Pittsburgh. Lizzy Seeberg '15 Remembered at Bench Dedication (The Observer) On Sunday, the legacy of former Saint Mary’s student Lizzy Seeberg was honored at a blessing and dedication of a memorial garden in her name. The ceremony was held in Riedinger Garden, and students, faculty and members of Seeberg’s family were in attendance. “These young people are always going to have a place to remember Lizzy,” her father, Tom Seeberg, said. “It gives us a neat little place. To me, she is everywhere, but it is nice to have little spots where you can just sit and reflect.” Perspectives on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition This lecture is part of the Center for Spirituality's Spring Lecture Series, Mind, Body, Spirit: Connected. Marquez '15 Wins "Rising Star" for Poetry Readings (WNIT-TV) As a student in the rigorous Dual Degree in Engineering program, you could describe Dara Marquez '15 as a rising star. Recently, WNIT-TV named her the region’s "Rising Star" for another talent—poetry recitation. Marquez competed in and won the local PBS station's "Rising Star" competition this summer. The WNIT-TV program is like "America's Got Talent" in that it features more than singers. About 150 people competed over several months leading up to the finale, which aired the week of July 29. Marquez offered several passionate poetry recitations. Dance Marathon for Riley Hospital is Saturday (South Bend Tribune) It takes heart to make a difference, and heart is behind Dance Marathon at Saint Mary’s College. The annual student-led event raises funds for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, where sick children from around the state find care. Since Saint Mary’s students brought Dance Marathon to the school in 2006, they have raised more than $460,000 for Riley Hospital. Rosenbaum Recognized as MIAA Defensive Player of the Week ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Saint Mary’s goalkeeper Chanler Rosenbaum its Defensive Player of the Week in women’s soccer for games played through September 22. 2012 Aquinas Symposium Speaker Announced Saint Mary's College is pleased to announce that the Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, is the speaker for the 15th Annual Symposium on St. Thomas Aquinas. The talk, which is open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 26 in the Student Center Lounge. The Bishop's lecture is titled “The Contemplation of Truth by Faith and Reason: St. Thomas Aquinas, Blessed John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI”. Professor on Mastering Money Management (Sassy Magazine) Susan Vance, professor emerita of business law and accounting, was interviewed by Saint Mary's alumna Jennifer Warfel Juszkiewicz '06 for an article on women and money management. The story appears in the July issue of Sassy, a locally published women's magazine. Vance taught a very popular elective course on financial literacy at the College and shares some of her best advice to women in this article. Glenda Ritz, State School Superintendent, to Speak at Saint Mary’s Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce that Glenda Ritz, state superintendent of public instruction, and Matthew Tully, an Indianapolis Star political columnist, will speak at the College on Monday, November 11 at 6 p.m. While the event is designed for students studying education at Saint Mary’s, the College community and the public are invited to attend this free event.
