Professor on Congresswoman's 'No' Vote (South Bend Tribune)
The South Bend Tribune turned to political science professor Sean Savage for comment on whether Republican Congresswoman Jackie Walorski's 'no' vote to end the government shutdown will hurt her politically. Savage said, as a Republican in a solidly Republican district, it was probably a smart move.

Hoosier children living in poverty often attend two or three different schools in a single year, said Glenda Ritz, Indiana’s state superintendent of public instruction. That’s because their families move when they can’t pay the rent, she said Monday during a public presentation at Saint Mary’s College.

Love Your Body Week to Share Positive Body Image Messages
Saint Mary’s College students will host Love Your Body Week next week, Feb. 25- March 1. The theme for the week is “Yes, You Are the Fairest of Them All” and includes events meant to encourage young women to see themselves in a positive light. Student organizers at this women’s college will inspire participants to empower their own beauty by straying from societal and media-provoked stereotypes and standards. The week’s free events are located throughout Saint Mary’s campus and are open to the public. It’s the third consecutive year for the event.

Tutoring Program is a Positive for Community (South Bend Tribune)
Flashcard races, board games, and creatively written stories are just some of what Saint Mary’s College and Coquillard Traditional School students work on together through the College Academy of Tutoring (CAT) program. In 2006, the Saint Mary’s Office of Civic and Social Engagement (OCSE) initiated CAT, which is modeled after a similar AmeriCorps program. The CAT program is designed to meet the academic needs of students in some of South Bend’s Title 1 elementary schools.

Pass the coupons and the gravy. Thanksgiving seems to be becoming "Black Friday Eve" with more and more stores opening on Thanksgiving night. Instead of stopping to consider what we have and being grateful for it, consumers may be thinking about what they don't have and want to get. Adrienne Lyles-Chockley, visiting philosophy professor who heads the justice education program, is included in this Christian Science Monitor article.

Employee Engagement Seminar Planned
The Saint Mary’s College Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative (WEI), in partnership with 1st Source Bank and Hawthorne Services, LLC, will host a seminar titled “Employee Engagement: Key to Optimum Performance” on Friday, March 15. The event will take place from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in room 145 of Spes Unica Hall at Saint Mary’s College. (Download a campus map at saintmarys.edu/map.) The event is free but space is limited. Holy Cross Harvest to collect donations for pantries (South Bend Tribu...
The Holy Cross institutions of Saint Mary’s College, Holy Cross College, and the University of Notre Dame will hold the third Holy Cross Harvest, “harvesting” food and monetary donations for various food pantries. Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s will hold their drives Monday to Feb. 15, while Holy Cross College will hold its harvest drive during the entire month of February. It's an example of going "Beyond the Campus" to make a difference in the community.

Saint Mary’s College Announces Dean of Faculty
Saint Mary’s College is pleased to announce that, after a national search, Vickie Lynne Hess has joined the College as dean of faculty. She earned her PhD at Indiana University, Bloomington and worked as a professor and administrator at Indiana Wesleyan in Marion for 25 years. She hails originally from New York City and most recently from American International College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, where she served as an academic dean since 2006. She is a product of an undergraduate women’s college, graduating from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts.

Students Energized by March for Life Experience (The Observer)
The presidential inauguration last Monday was not the only event that drew crowds to Washington D.C. last week. Friday was the March for Life, an annual pro-life rally held in the city around the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe vs. Wade. Respect for Life Club President Allison Rhea ’13 and Silvia Cuevas ’13 were interviewed.
