Professor Emeritus of Chemistry Named American Chemical Society Fellow Saint Mary’s College is proud to announce that the American Chemical Society (ACS) has named J. Philip Bays, professor emeritus of chemistry, an ACS Fellow. Fellows come from academe, industry, and government. Bays is the first Saint Mary’s professor to be named an ACS Fellow. Echoing Air to Perform English Baroque Music The Department of Music at Saint Mary's College welcomes to the College the dynamic ensemble Echoing Air, in residence at Marian University in Indianapolis. Echoing Air specializes in the repertoire of the English Baroque, with an emphasis on chamber works featuring countertenor voices with baroque ensemble. Echoing Air will present two events at Saint Mary's College on Monday, September 17. Both are open to the public and will take place in Little Theatre of Moreau Center for the Arts. Henrietta Lacks Events Coming up in February (South Bend Tribune) Saint Mary's College will host two public events in February related to the non-fiction book, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." The 2010 book, by author Rebecca Skloot, tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, a cervical cancer patient who died in 1951 at age 31. Unbeknownst to Lacks or her family, cancer cells taken from her were grown in culture and became an immortal cell line that has been used ever since for medical research. A Madrigal Dinners Music Sampler (WNIT-TV) Take a listen to the Saint Mary's College Madrigal Singers, who appeared recently on the WNIT (PBS) program Experience Michiana. The 40th annual Madrigal Dinners will take place at the College November 30-December 2. It's a Renaissance-style Christmas banquet and performance celebration. This year there's a new set (designed and constructed by students), a new script (by a faculty member), and the Madrigal Dancers are back. Tickets available at moreaucenter.com. "Puss in Boots," a Music Student Production, Feb. 16-18 The Saint Mary’s College Department of Music will present the children’s opera El Gato con Botas, more commonly known as Puss in Boots, next month as its spring musical production. With a cast made up exclusively of Saint Mary’s students, the opera will be performed, in English, Thursday, February 16 and Friday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a matinee at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 18. Martin Luther King Jr. to Be Honored with Week of Events Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 16 and Saint Mary’s College will honor the Civil Rights Leader with events all week. Three are open to the South Bend-area community. Student Involvement and Multicultural Services (SIMS), the Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership (CWIL), and the Sisters of Nefertiti, a student club which celebrates the history, culture, and contributions of African-Americans, are co-sponsors for the week. Dance Ensemble Workshop Presents “a Time to Dance...” The Saint Mary’s College Dance Ensemble Workshop takes the stage of O’Laughlin Auditorium on Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28. Curtain times for DanceArts 2012 “a Time to Dance...” are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. DanceArts is an annual presentation of the Saint Mary’s College Program in Dance, Department of Communication Studies, Dance and Theatre. New Director of Office for Civic and Social Engagement/ Experiential L... Saint Mary’s College is pleased to announce and welcome Erika Buhring, Ph.D., as director of the Office for Civic and Social Engagement and experiential learning coordinator. Buhring began her position on August 1. Thousands flock to South Bend for Commencement Weekend (WSBT) More than 3,000 students will walk across the stage at Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College this weekend. Thousands more will make the trip to support the students. IU South Bend, Holy Cross, Ivy Tech, Bethel College and Purdue College of Technology have already held graduation ceremonies for this year. It is estimated that more than 44,000 people will visit the area during graduation season, which means an extra boost for local businesses. Saint Mary's graduate Kelly Murphy is interviewed.
